What is Breast cancer?

Breast cancer is an uncontrolled development of cancer cells in the breasts. A breast is made up of glands which are referred as lobules. These lobules can produce milk and thin tubes called ducts which carry milk from the lobules to the nipple. Breast tissue also contains connective tissues, fats, blood vessels and lymph nodes. Normally breast cancer starts in the cells of the lobules. With time cancer cells can invade in the nearby healthy tissues of the breast. If cancer cells occur in the lymph nodes then they get a pathway to enter other parts of the body. Ductal carcinoma is one of the most common types of breast cancer. Invasive breast cancer is breast cancer that spread from where it began in the ducts or lobules to surrounding tissue. There are different stages of breast cancer. These stages depend on the spread of cancer cells. These stages can vary from early, curable to metastatic breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Treatments

Treatment for breast cancer depends on several factors. The type of cancer, stage of cancer, general health of the patient, spread of cancer cells, and the sensitivity of cancer to certain hormones and medical history of the patient are all taken into consideration while treating breast cancer. Treatment plans usually include a surgical procedure to remove the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy is often followed to aid the success of the surgery. These therapies are also known as adjuvant or neoadjuvant therapy. All these therapies are performed with an aim to increase long-term survival rates and hopeful lead to recovery. Following are some of the treatments for breast cancer.

Primary Treatments

  1. Lumpectomy: - While performing lumpectomy the surgeons removes the cancer cells from the breasts and some small margin of normal tissue surrounding it. Lumpectomy is usually effective on small tumors.
  2. Mastectomy: - Mastectomy is performed with two approaches it can be either simple or radical. A simple mastectomy is also referred as partial mastectomy which is performed by removing all the breast tissue. The breast tissue includes lobules, ducts, fatty tissue, and skin. Radical mastectomy is also referred as total mastectomy. A radical mastectomy removes the chest wall muscles and the surrounding lymph nodes in the armpit.

Adjuvant Therapy Treatment

In addition to surgery, a breast cancer treatment usually includes drug or radiation therapies. These are called adjuvant therapies. Neoadjuvant therapy is used before the surgery is performed. This therapy is used to shrink large tumors and make the surgery easier. Adjuvant therapy treatments are intended to increase long-term, survival rates of the patient.

  1. Biological or targeted therapy: - Biological therapy can stop the growth of cancer by inhibiting the actions of proteins on cancer cells. This therapy is often used with chemotherapy or hormone therapy. Biological therapy is also known as a "targeted therapy as it kills only the cancer cells and does not damage any other nearby cells.
  2. Chemotherapy: - Chemotherapy not only destroys cancer cells in the breast, but it also kills any other cancer cells in the blood or have spread to other parts of the body. Chemotherapy also shrinks the size of large tumors. This therapy also reduces the risk of recurrence of cancer cells.
  3. Hormone Therapy: - Hormone therapy uses drugs to block specific hormones that help some types of cancer cells grow and multiply. These drugs usually stops and slowdowns the production of the hormone in the body or it blocks the hormone receptors.
  4. Radiation Therapy: - Radiation therapy usually targets the tumor or the areas where cancer cells are growing. This therapy destroys the cancerous tissue.
