Treatments to Cure Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer treatment involves a combination of surgery & chemotherapy. Both the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus , nearby lymph nodes & a fold of fatty abdominal tissue (omentum) where ovarian cancer often spreads is removed with a surgical procedure. If the cancer is detected in the early stage then less extensive surgery is performed. In stage 1 cancer, there may be a possibility to remove only one ovary & its fallopian tube, this may preserve future fertility. After the surgery chemo sessions or chemotherapy drugs are given to kill remaining cancer cells. This can be used initially for a woman having advanced ovarian cancer.

Benefits of Ovarian Cancer Treatment & Surgery

Ob/ Gyn will perform various tests to confirm ovarian cancer such as colonoscopy, ultrasound, imaging tests like Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), & Positron Emission Tomography (PET), barium enema X-rays, blood test, laparoscopy, chest X-rays, & blood test to look for CA-125. Doctor will use ‘staging’ diagnostic procedure to check cancer advancement & also exploratory laparotomy to confirm or rule out an ovarian cancer diagnosis. Genetic testing is also done so as to rule out family history of ovarian, uterine or endometrial, & breast cancer.

The benefit of surgery is that it stops advancement of the cancer because 2 ovaries & associated reproductive organs are removed. If a woman has tumor in one ovary then only the cancerous one is removed & other is preserved for any future pregnancy. The second ovary may also be removed to prevent cancer reoccurrence. Some receive chemotherapy to kill any remaining cancerous cells in the body which prolong chances of survival. Radiation therapy lessen symptoms of advanced cancer in some patients.
